Visitors to our shop often ask us: What is a Noren?
A tradition in Japan, noren (split-curtains) are hung in shops and restaurant doorways to block dust and sunlight. In private homes, they are used as a room divider or doorway curtain. We love them as wall art! Hang it on a bamboo rod, easily found at any garden shop.
Designed in Japan, this elegant noren features hand-stitched designs called sashiko. This shibori tie-dying technique which originated in Japan, has been practiced for centuries in China, India, Africa and Latin America. The fabric is folded, wrapped, twisted or pleated and then secured with string before being dyed. When unbound, distinctive patterns emerge, making each piece completely unique.
